Growth Hacking Class With Sean Ellis

Sean Ellis is the first marketer at a number of notable startups, including Dropbox, LogMeIn, Lookout, Xobni, and Uproar. Today, he is the CEO/Founder of Qualaroo. We were very lucky to have him teach “Enhancing User Engagement for Faster Growth” at Coloft Academy today. Here are some key take aways from his talk.

What is Product/Market Fit? It means your product is a “must have” for a large group of people. If 40% of people would feel “very disappointed” if they could no longer use your product, you’re ready to ramp up. Not just “somewhat disappointed”.

The number one thing that kills startups is premature scaling. As a startup founder, remember to be patient. You can read more about this and other findings on the Startup Genome website.

Identify your “Must Have Benefit”. What is the one thing about your product/service that people love? Ask them, not just multiple choice but also open ended questions. Response rate will range around 1~2%, but with enough traffic, that’s a lot of data. Sean Ellis’s new startup, Qualaroo makes this really easy to do.

Here’s a cool equation: desire – friction = conversion rate. Reduce desire, increase friction. Great way to simply thinking.

A/B Testing is great. Some great tools include KISSmetrics, Mixpanel, Optimizely, and Unbounce.

Lots more great info from the class that I didn’t type up here. Check out Sean’s blog if you want to learn more. Also, don’t miss future Coloft Academy classes :)
